PROGRAMMES AT A GLANCE

While discussions during the day will be two fold: Tribal Perspective on Development and Tribal Medicinal Systems, Samvaad’s evenings are reserved for live tribal art performances that are sure to enthrall. With a view to broaden the event and make it truly participatory and impactful, we are planning the following events:

  • Regional Samvaads: As a prelude to Samvaad 2016, we organised three regional Samvaads at at Vadodara (Bhasha Trust), Mysore (Viveka Tribal Centre for Learning, Hosahalli) and Shillong (North-Eastern Hill University) to make it more participatory and broad-based. The regional Samvaads were planned as a one and half day events, divided into three sessions. The first session had discussions on tribal issues relevant to the region. The second session was linked to the theme of this year’s Samvaad which is ‘Tribal Medicinal Systems’. The third session was reserved for their traditional poetry, songs, music, folklore.
  • Tribal medicine: There will be stalls for traditional tribal healers to display their medicines and also offer consultations and remedies.
  • Cultural Performances: Beginning with the beat of 151 Nagaras of Jharkhand and Odisha, Samvaad 2016 will also feature the Mashira Nritya of the Siddis, the Shim Laam or the Fly Dance of the Rongmei Kabui Nagas of Manipur, the Hojagiri dance of the Reangs and much, much more. Whilst tribes from across the country will be presenting their music and dance, a key highlight will be a showstopper tribal fashion show.
  • Engaging schools: Samvaad 2016 will kick-off with a series of events planned in schools not just at Jamshedpur, but also in tribal areas like Noamundi, Joda, Sukinda, Bamnipal and Kalinganagar. The events will include a drawing competition based on tribal themes and a skit competition based on Birsa Munda. Also, at Jamshedpur, we will have a workshop on tribal art.
  • Film Contest: Entries for documentary films on tribal themes are invited from educational institutions/amateur filmmakers from across the country. For this, we are partnering with School of Media and Culture Studies at TISS. A panel of eminent judges will select the prize winners and the best films will be screened during the event.
  • Handicrafts: There will be stalls displaying and selling handicrafts, textiles, paintings etc. Established organisations like Jharcraft, Antz and Trifed, as well as traditional tribal artisans from all over the country, will participate in the event.
  • Panel Discussions: Panel discussions will be held on the theme of Tribal Health Systems. The panel discussions on the three days will be on diseases afflicting tribal populations, tribal medicinal systems, tribal nutrition, innovative models in tribal health-care, role of Shamans in tribal health, etc
  • Paper Contest: Papers from research scholars/anthropologists/health practitioners from across the country will be invited. The main theme is "Tribal Health Systems". There are several sub-themes such as diseases afflicting tribal populations, tribal medicinal systems, tribal nutrition, innovative models in tribal health-care, role of shamans in tribal health, etc. Selected papers will be presented at the event.

Photography Contest: Entries for photographs on tribal themes from educational institutions/amateur photographers from across the country will be invited.
