WATER

EN5 TOTAL WATER USE

Tata Steel has taken various actions for optimum use of water. The increased emphasis on water recirculation in all process units has contributed to considerable reduction in specific water consumption. Specific water consumption (including that for power generation) has reduced by more than 4.2% over the last year. Close monitoring of water losses, recycling of ash quenching water from Power Houses, recycling of treated sewage water for steel making and of waste water from various drains have resulted in such reduction. The entire domestic consumption of the city of Jamshedpur, that is 57.6 million m3/annum of water, is supplied and managed by the company.

Total water used at Jharia Mines is 0.564 million m3 (0.82 in 02-03) for industrial and 3.907 million m3 (6.04 in 02-03) for domestic usages. At West Bokaro 4.93 million m3 (5.66 in 02-03) water is used for industrial use and 2.95 million m3 (2.69 in 02-03) for domestic usages. At Sukinda Mines during reporting period 1.18 million m3 of water was used for industrial and 0.56 million m3 for domestic purposes. Total water consumption for Joda, Noamundi & Gomardih is furnished below. The water consumption at other locations is comparatively low and hence not reported.

EN20 WATER SOURCES AND RELATED ECOSYSTEMS/HABITATS SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECTED BY USE OF WATER

The water for industrial and domestic usage at Jamshedpur, is drawn from river Subarnarekha. This river is perennial in nature and water abstraction does not have any adverse impact on the eco-system. The other source of water at Jamshedpur is a captive reservoir at Dimna (Capacity-34.224 million m3 and Area-92.6 sq. km.). Dimna Lake is situated on the North Eastern side of the Jamshedpur town at a distance of 12-13 kms. It is an earthen dam with masonry concrete wall constructed by the company about three decades ago to meet the emergency water supply demand of the Works and Township particularly during poor monsoon years. Three major drains carrying rainwater and surface run-off water from nearby villages pour into this artificial impounding. However the Company also pumps water during monsoon and post-monsoon seasons from the river Subarnarekha to Dimna Reservoir.

The river water analysis is given in the Table below. This analysis indicates that the quality of river conforms with the National Standard (BIS-2296 – 1982 – Class-A). There was no adverse impact on river water quality during winter season when abstraction of water is maximum.
