MATERIALS

EN1 MATERIALS USED OTHER THAN WATER

Raw materials are the minerals and semi processed materials used as inputs in iron and steel making, lubricants are not included in raw materials. The specific consumption is calculated based on the total tonnage of raw materials divided by saleable steel production. Reduction in ash content in West Bokaro coal had favourable impact on specific raw material consumption.

Tubes Division use steel supplied from Steel Works and the scrap generated from these Units is recycled to Steel Works. Even though Tata Steel is vertically integrated, material consumed predominantly, in mining operation has not been considered here. Similarly, other consumables and spares consumed in mining operation have also not been included here.

In addition following quantities of semi-processed materials were also used in the Steel Works. These materials were purchased from the external sources.

•   Pig Iron, 146865 tonnes against 74609 tonnes during 2002-2003.
•   Sponge Iron, 303569 tonnes against 270415 tonnes during 2002-2003.

EN2 WASTES (FROM EXTERNAL SOURCES) USED

The only waste material from external source that is sometimes used by Tata Steel is the iron/steel scrap purchased from market for Steel Melting Shops. During the year 2003-2004, no scrap has been purchased.
