Intellectual Property (IP) assets for Licensing / Commercialisation
Jamshedpur, May 28, 2008

Anticipating the need to become self reliant in technology, Tata Steel has established a sound mechanism for capturing new developments and filing them as Intellectual Property (IP). Building a sound IP portfolio is seen as a major enabler in the Company that would help establish technology leadership.

Tata Steel, over the years has increased its total IP portfolio from 32 in FY 2000 to 493 (including Patents, Copyrights & Designs) till date. Out of these 493, 133 IPR have been granted; the remaining 360 have been filed and are at different stages of being granted. The IPR includes Products (New grade of Steel), Process (New process technology development in steel making) and Copyright (Software).

Tata Steel is in the process of commercialising its IP assets and is on the look out for prospective customers. Currently, one patent and twelve copyrights have been identified for commercialisation as pilot cases. 7 companies world wide have shown interest for the patent, which is on on-line property prediction in the hot strip mill. 78 companies have so far shown interest in the copyrights, which are for e-learning packages.
