Raw material processing and handling is generally
associated with dust and air pollution. It used to be so in the Raw Materials Bedding and
Blending (RMBB) Unit of the Sinter Plant in Tata Steel till about five years ago. But now,
there has been a sea change. Through the persistent efforts of a group of employees,
several terrace gardens, lawns and green houses have flourished alongside iron ore fines,
lime fines, coke breeze, serpentine, etc. Sounds unbelievable, but it is true. Even more
startling is that recently, RMBB earned its name in horticulture (an alien word for sinter
makers) by participating in the latest Annual Flower Show at Jamshedpur. RMBB won prizes-
not for preparing high quality sinter mix, but for being ab1e to nurture prize winning
Roses, Asters, and Dahlias. RMBB was also awarded an overall certificate of excellence by
the Horticulture Society !
Flowers and raw materials are now part of the same basket -a basket of joy,
satisfaction and care. This has been the result of the keen interest taken by Mr. Ravinder
Singh (Unit Leader) and the initiative of Mr. Shankar Sarkhel (Attendant- Mechanical) who,
with the help of Mr. Rakesh Kumar and Mr. H.K. Patel of the Works Garden Section have been
instrumental in developing a beautiful garden around the RMBB Building.
The prizes bear testimony to what passion can do- it is the foundation of the will to
win.
