Over 24
percent of the 230,000 patients attended to annually by Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai are
from Indias North East and East. To serve these patients virtually at their
doorsteps, the Tata Group took the decision to create the Tata Medical Centre, an advanced
cancer treatment facility at Kolkata. The foundation stone for the Centre was unveiled by
West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Tata Group Chairman, Mr Ratan
Tata on February 21, 2006.
To be built on a 10-acre plot, the Tata Medical Centre will comprise 150 beds as well as
provide outpatient and ambulatory care facilities for patients with cancer. The Centre
will be set up along the lines of the 65-year old Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai. It will
be supported by the newly created Tata Medical Centre Trust, which will receive funding
from three Tata trusts - Sir Dorab Tata Trust, Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Jamsetji Tata
Trust as well as from the Tata Group of companies.
All of us in the Tata Group are the inheritors of a legacy of creating institutions
that make a difference to the world we live in. The doctrine of social responsibility as
professed by our Founder was, and will continue to be the central theme of the Tata way of
business, the Chairman, Mr Ratan Tata reminded all those present at the ceremony.
The Tata Medical Centre will be a tertiary care centre for cancer and will focus on
prevention, cure, rehabilitation and palliative care. The infrastructure for outpatient
services will be such that, on one hand, the need for capitalisation is reduced to a
minimum, while on the other hand Ambulatory care is maximised. This will ensure that
patients are provided maximum care, at the same time morbidity and costs associated with
hospitalisation are minimised.
The Tata Medical Centre will, also have a strategic alliance with Tata Memorial Centre,
Mumbai to plan, commission and assist in the running of the new hospital, and ensure
excellence and sustained progress of the Institution. |
