A concerted effort to
enhance despatches via rail resulted in 2.151 million tonnes of steel being despatched
during the year as compared to 2.058 million tonnes in the previous year. The Division
also achieved the Best Ever Total Despatch of 0.75 million tonnes in 2004-05, a
significant growth over the 0.675 despatches made by wagons. The Division brought down the
Total Despatch System Cost (TDSC-NTI) cost to Rs 1273 per tonne in FY-05 from Rs 1296 per
tonne in FY-04. It also achieved the Best Ever Long Products weekly despatch compliance of
80% in FY-05 as against 75% achieved in the previous year.

In 2004-05, the Sukinda
Chromite Mine became the first mine in the world to be certified to SA-8000 as well as
ISO-14001 for its Environmental Management System. The Division recorded an almost
100% growth in turnover at approximately Rs 1400 crores and an over three fold increase in
PBT, at approximately Rs 700 crores. Chrome Ore production at the Division touched 15.8
lakh Mt, Manganese Ore production reached 4.61 lakh Mt and Ferro Manganese Production
recorded was 44,200 Mt, at the close of the financial year. |
The Division has successfully
created a domestic market for iron ore fines. It also recorded the highest ever sale of
sized iron ore at 1.8 Mt.

Project Shikhar Vijay,
initiated by the Tubes Division to ensure an increase in employee productivity, resulted
in the highest ever employee productivity in the SBU at 128 mt/emp/year, which is 2%
better than its previous best. Sales at the Tubes SBU grew by 5% to achieve the Best Ever
Total Sales at 2,17,621 Mt. Sales of structural tube and precision tubes also grew by 9%
and 17%, respectively. |
FY 2004-05 was among the best
that the SBU has seen in several years with Total Revenue climbing a record 25% to touch
Rs 860 crores. The Division achieved higher visibility for its products through a
promotion campaign, which included a rain water harvesting programme, co-branded credit
cards, a Save Water, Save Life campaign and - for the first time in the Tube
Industry - the launch of a branded lifetime guarantee programme, Aajeevan, on
plumbing pipes.

Bearings
production reached more than 25 million pieces. The Division hardly earned any profit. But
this year even Bearings has earned a good profit, Dr Mukherjee said. Production at
the Division grew by almost 3 million bearings, from over 22 million in FY 2003-04 to over
25 million in FY 2004-05.
