Commitment to a cause meant for a
positive change in society has always been foremost on Tata Steels agenda.
Therefore, organisations which focus on individuals but whose aspirations receive scant
attention who receive relentless support from the Company. Tata Steel, an equal
opportunity employer as well as a signatory to various international charters for
affirmative action, recently supported several initiatives aimed at empowering the
physically challenged. The Company lent tremendous support to the National ArtsAbility
Festival presented by the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People
(NCPEDP) in association with the Asia Pacific Therapeutic Theatre (APTT), in New Delhi.
Its weeklong Photo & Arts Exhibition was followed by a stage performance by children
belonging to various organisations. Several plays were enacted by them in an enchantingly
novel way. Physically challenged children left the audience spell bound with their
performance and proved that a little encouragement is all that is required for them to
show the world that they indeed have a rightful place alongside the able-bodied.

Mr Chanakya Chaudhary, who represented
Tata Steel at the shows, was completely enthralled by the impressive performance by these
special members of the society, for whom even today finding an opportunity to prove their
mettle is a Herculean task. Mr Javed Abidi, Executive Director, NCPEDP recorded his
appreciation with a vote of thanks to the Company.
Gaining ground with a vision to
succeed
Using their sixth sense as an advantage
and as a tool to shape their talent, cricketers from various state teams participated in
the Tata Steel ACBI National Cricket for the Blind Tournament, held from February 2 to 7,
2005 at Jamshedpur. Visually challenged yet passionate about the game, these sportsmen
grabbed the opportunity provided by Tata Steel to display their talent during this
tournament. The final match was played at Keenan Stadium between Delhi and Karnataka where
the latter outplayed their opponents to win the Championship.

In order to boost the morale of the
teams, international cricketer, Syed Saba Karim of Corporate Comunications, Tata Steel was
invited as the chief guest. His presence was a source of great inspiration for all those
on the field.
Rhythms of Joy and Deaflympics
Excellence is a journey that has several
milestones but is forever a part of all Tata Steels endeavours. It strives to impart
confidence even to those who might believe that success in any field will always remain a
distant dream for them. Recently, Tata Steel altered this belief when four of its athletes
from Tata Steel Athletics Coaching Centre accompanied by Coach Satnam Singh, participated
in the 20th Deaflympics (World Games of the Deaf) held at Melbourne, Australia.
As a part of the relay teams in the
semi-finals and finals, the athletes representing the Company were suffused with pride and
new found confidence on being given an opportunity to display their talent and caliber
before spectators from all over the world. |
