Speed supremos battle over Bearings Rally
It is Tata Bearings, which millions of
Indian vehicles rely on to operate smoothly. But it is the Tata Bearings Monsoon Rally
that the speed supremos of Eastern India look forward to for excitement each year. The
biggest motor sports event of the region, its sponsorship by Bearings Division has
catapulted the rally to the National level. This year, therefore, it attracted a large
number of participants from across the country, including top professionals and well known
amateurs who love the thrill and adventure associated with the sport. The rally comprises
of two legs. The first takes the rallyists from Kolkata to Jamshedpur via Kharagpur, while
the second leg covers the distance between Jamshedpur to Kharagpur, where the Bearings
Division is based. The first leg of the rally was flagged off in Kolkata from the Salt
Lake Stadium on September 1, by Mr Subhas Chakraborty, Honble Minister-in-Charge,
Transport, Sports, HRBC and Youth Affairs, Government of West Bengal.
After a brief halt at Kharagpur, the
rallyists sped to Jamshedpur, to clock in their best timings before resting for the night.
The next morning, they were flagged off by DC, East Singhbhum, Dr Nitin M Kulkarni, to
undertake the second leg of the rally. 50 participants comprising 25 teams covered a
distance of 515 kilometres, including 180 kilometres over mud and dirt tracks across the
states of West Bengal and Jharkhand. The Monsoon Rally repeatedly tested the ability of
man and machine against the forces of nature. A husband and wife team from Tata Bearings,
Mr and Mrs Durai participated in the rally this year, in addition to two other teams from
the Division.
