Jamshedpur was built on land leased to the Company by the Government of India, across Sakchi village, for a period of 99 years in 1907. The Company established Asia’s first and India’s largest private sector integrated steel plant over a 7100 hectare area. While the plant itself stands on 800 hectares, the rest of the land was used to create a well planned township. The Company has since its inception held the belief that business cannot remain an island of prosperity surrounded by a sea of poverty. It, therefore, committed its resources, people, engineers, doctors, professional to, almost a century ago “improve the quality of life of the communities it serves.” Thus, over the years as the growth and expansion of the steel plant resulted in the high levels of profitability, the Company ensured the very best civic amenities for the people of Jamshedpur. Even as a fledging launched welfare initiatives for those residing with a 30 km radius of its operating units. Tata Steel also created dedicated agencies for Social services including those for rural development, community development, family welfare and tribal welfare. Jamshedpur’s civic amenities provider is the only ISO-14001 certified agency of its kind in the country.

The renewal of the lease provides Tata Steel with the opportunity to further augment the services it offers and to catalyse socio-economic uplift across a very wide cross section of beneficiaries, many of who are economically challenged.
