In exactly 124 months, the HFIW Mill at Tata Steel’s Tubes Division was modernised, 78 days ahead of the schedule date and within the stipulated budget. The now virtually new mill was inaugurated by the Managing Director, Mr B Muthuraman on August 11, 2004.

A battery of world class suppliers were engaged by the Division to replace, upgrade and add to its facilities, As a result of the modernisation the throughput at the Division has increased from 80,000 tonnes to 110,000 tonnes, there has been a reduction in the manufacturing cycle time, increase in manpower productivity as well as improvement in data integrity on production, transfer and stoppage.

Dr T Mukherjee takes charge of
IISI Technology Committee
Mr T Mukerjee

Deputy Managing Director, Steel, Dr T Mukherjee, became the first Indian to be accorded the honour of chairing the Committee on Technology of the Brussels-based International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI). Dr Mukherjee’s appointment comes at a time when the importance of India and the Indian steel industry is being recognised globally.

A Ph D from University of Sheffield, Dr Mukherjee, who took over from Dr Norman Lockington of Dofasco, Canada is expected to bring his vast experience to bear on IISI’s current key business areas, including the short-term and medium-term forecast for the steel business; benchmarking all areas of the business; market development by undertaking common projects to develop new applications; and sustainability by addressing environmental and sustainability issues.
