Saplings are planted to green the planet

The annual afforestation programme undertaken by West Bokaro had a very unique purpose to it this year. On July 8, over 500 saplings of the Jaitropha were planted in the vicinity of the power house. Each tree will, once grown, yield over 2500 kilogrammes of seeds, the sale of which yields over Rs 22, 000/-. However, the extract from the seeds can be used as an alternative to diesel fuel in tractors, pump sets and other diesel engines.

This extraordinary plant provides a truly exciting opportunity as it can be easily grown virtually anywhere, including land that it barren or rocky. It does to be tended as animals do not like the taste of it nor cause any harm to it. Neither is fertiliser or manure necessary to make it grow. The first sapling was planted by the General Manager of the West Bokaro Division, Mr. A. M. Mishra.

The afforestation campaign of the Division continued till the end of September, during which time over 100,000 saplings were planted in the Collieries.
