The Tata Steel Rural Development Society
has since 1981 working towards providing clean drinking water to the villages within its
operational area. The extensive work undertaken by it was appreciated by Mr Jack Timken
during a visit to Jamshedpur. He drove to several villages in its peri-urban areas,
including the site of an old rig machine used by TSRDS, to see the work undertaken by the
Society. Therefore, when TSRDS requested the Timken Foundation to extend a grant to it to
purchase a new rig machine, there was no reason for the Foundation to refuse.

A total number of 1539 tube wells have been installed by
TSRDS and another 1476 repaired by it since 1981. These tubewells are a reliable and
accessible source for clean drinking water for villagers who otherwise have to depend on
natural resources. The process of installing a tubewell is scientific and requires a hydro
geological survey to be conducted prior to the installation.
