“There is no better name than that of “my good friend” Dr Jamshed J Irani’s to be associated with an excellence programme”, the Honourable Finance Minister,
Mr P Chidambaram told a packed Tata Auditorium at the Dr Jamshed J Irani Education Excellence Award 2006 function. Mr Chidambaram’s presence at this year’s award function was a great honour for the four-year-old programme.
Mr Chidambaram could not have iterated Tata Steel’s views better. In 2003, Tata Steel undertook to infuse excellence in education through the Tata Steel Educational Excellence Initiative. This programme was based on the Malcolm Baldrige Education Criteria for Education Excellence. The Tata Group Companies have, since the 1990s, been following the Tata Business Excellence Model, a framework for promoting organisational excellence, based on the Malcolm Baldrige Criteria. When it was instituted, the Education Award was named after the Company’s former Managing Director to reflect Dr Irani’s never ending quest for quality. It was under Dr Irani’s stewardship that Tata Steel was awarded the JRD QV Award for Business Excellence.
“Education is a fundamental requirement in any city. Today Jamshedpur has the very best quality of life, power, town services; this award is an effort to achieve similar levels of excellence in education”,
Mr B Muthuraman, Managing Director, Tata Steel and the driving force behind the initiative, told the august gathering comprising citizens of Jamshedpur. Youth and education are subjects very close to
Mr Muthuraman’s heart. The Steel Company was motivated by the fact that schools play a profound role in developing the citizens of tomorrow. Therefore, it sought to promote a programme which facilitates the development of an environment that nurtures them.

Sister Flavian, Principal, Carmel Junior College is honoured for her School’s performance excellence
“The greatest need in India is better education. Quality education for our children is essential to make this country the
prime power that it is supposed to be”,
Dr Irani emphasised.
Schools in Jamshedpur have been classified into three categories, each of which has four recognition levels. While none of the schools achieved the requisite 600 points to win the award, several were recognised for the performance excellence exhibited by them. Dr Irani asked the school principals present not to feel discouraged, as the quality journey is indeed long, one that even took Tata Steel six years to complete.
While congratulating the participants, the Union Finance Minister said in an extremely informative and instructive address, “I am glad to have come to Jamshedpur, on the occasion when this city is celebrating change, excellence, flowering of children, progress and prosperity. I would like to congratulate Tata Steel on instituting this award to recognise excellence in the field of education.”
