UN Global Regional Conclave appreciated by the United Nations

Tata Steel had aspired to give a determined push to the momentum with which Corporate Sustainability is progressing in the South Asian region by hosting the UN Global Compact Regional Conclave at Jamshedpur. This was the first such regional conclave to be held anywhere in the World. The Company’s effort has been appreciated by a person of the stature of Mr Georg Kell, Executive Head of Global Compact, in the Office of the Secretary-General. We bring you the text of his letter to Mr A N Singh, Deputy Managing Director, Corporate Services, Tata Steel, on his return to New York.

“Dear Mr Singh,

I would like to thank you for the privilege of taking part in the first ever Global Compact Regional Conclave, Tata Steel so graciously hosted in Jamshedpur.

I was truly impressed by the depth of understanding of the issues discussed and by the innovative initiatives that are on-going in the region. We are looking forward to collaborating with you and your colleagues on follow-up and especially on our joint publication.

I am pleased to share with you my sense of alignment with the strategic orientation of business and society questions. I am pleased that you are willing to explore how best the Global Compact can be advanced in India. We would welcome your proposals in this regard.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Georg Kell

IISI leads the way in Sustainability

The International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) has shown the way to the steel industry by publishing the first sustainability report for the industry at the joint IISI/OECD Special Meeting on Steel Issues in Paris on January 12, 2005. The eleven indicators that were used to measure the sustainability of the industry were covered in Issue 5 of Tisco News.

An extremely engrossing document, it contains case studies from participating members. The case studies outline the efforts that individual companies are undertaking to fulfill their corporate social responsibilities. The publication “The Measure of Our Sustainability” is available from IISI’s online bookshop and is free to download from worldsteel.org. Planning for the 2005 Sustainability Report is already underway.
