On April 24, 2005, the Honourable Chief Minister of Orissa, Mr Naveen Patnaik dedicated a large part of his day to launching a series of projects to be undertaken by the Tata Group. Among them was the inauguration of the J N Tata Technical Education Centre at Gopalpur, in Ganjam district and the foundation laying ceremony of the Global Software Development Centre of Tata Consultancy Services as well as the ground breaking ceremony of an IndiOne Hotel promoted by Indian Hotels. Mr Patnaik also squeezed in a few minutes to inaugurate an electronic display board gifted to the city of Bhubaneshwar by Tata Steel.

For the Company, its continued involvement and engagement in the development of the state of Orissa is part of its ever growing links established through efforts spanning a century. It has taken investments, infrastructure and progress to the state. The Group, and especially Tata Steel, aspires to translate the bonds developed over a ‘Century of Trust’ to create a century of growth and prosperity for the state. In addition to the proposed 6 million tonne plant at Kalinganagar, Tata Steel has opted to address the need for progress of the people through opportunities arising out of the project.

The discovery of iron ore at Gorumahisani, Badampur and Sulaipath in the erstwhile princely state of Mayurbhanj, today’s Orissa, was the crucial factor which ensured that India’s first integrated steel plant was established in Sakchi, now Jamshedpur. The ruler of the state matched the vision of the Founder, Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata in recognising the progress modern industry could ensure for his people, and a lease for the mines was immediately granted.

"The Steel remains committed to be a 'partner in progress' with the state of Orissa and will continuously strive to improve the quality of life of people through overall socio-economic development and sustainable industrialisation."

- Mr B Muthuraman

Though the earliest mines are now closed, except for a few small ones, as their reserves have been fully utilised by the Company, this area of Orissa has given India its first bridges, dams, the army its tanks and the common man a home.

Today, Tata Steel’s Joda East Iron Mine; Khondbond Mine in Keonjhar district for which a lease was granted in 1933; and Dolomite Mine in Gomardih continue to build on a legacy of progress created by the Company. Among the major initiatives pioneered by Tata Steel in Orissa are the introduction of steel wages in its mines, along with amenities such as housing, electricity, water and free medical services for its employees.

All in one day - the Tata's take high growth opportunities to Orissa
