Winner of Safety Competition receive their awards

With the year 2004 designated as the “Year of Safety” at Tata Steel, the Company which has world class facilities and world class employees, is making a bid to make its safety performance match world standards.

A prime area of concern, the Company has institutionalised these efforts through a Safety Policy and a division dedicated to Safety. The 33rd National Safety Day, March 4, 2004, therefore had great significance for the Company.

A special function was held at the Steel Works to mark the occasion and to recognise safe practices, activities and awareness initiatives among the divisions of the Company.

Present at the function were senior Company and Union officials as well as Mr A K Choudhary, Deputy Chief Inspector of Factories, Government of Jharkhand, Dr T Mukherjee, Deputy Managing Director, Steel and Mr R B B Singh, President, Tata Workers’ Union.

“Tata Steel is getting in the best consultants in the field of safety, such as Du Pont Safety Services, who have great experience in handling hazardous material and conditions,” Dr Mukherjee stated. “The system of Total Productive Maintenance being implemented in the Company will not only enhance performance but will also ensure safe working practice and conditions,” he added.

Tata Steel is already working towards achieving OHSAS 18001 certification for safety compliance and intends to adhere to even the most stringent requirement in both letter and spirit.

The Company’s Chief of Safety, Mr O B Krishna provided an insight into the Company’s safety initiatives during the past year. These include an Online Incident Reporting System to capture incidents or near misses, so that their cause may be identified and suitable preventive and corrective measures taken. The Company has also introduced Work Permit Systems and a Vendor Empanelment System based on which vendors are empaneled.

A week-long safety exhibition, which showcased safety procedures and initiatives, was also held during Safety Week.

No shortcuts in Safety says Wire Division

 

The Safety Day celebration at Wire Division

An imaginative “Snakes and Ladders” display board with no ladders at Wire Division, Borivili effectively communicated the message that there are no shortcuts in Safety. To make the occasion distinct from all others, the Employees Canteen was colourfully decorated and safety banners displayed all over the plant premises. All employees also wore Safety Day badges.

Mr Partha Sengupta, EIC, Wire Division, explained that though Zero Accident is considered impossible, it has been achieved by Wire Division. He distributed awards to the winners of various Safety Day contests.
