The Founders emphasis on education, as a means to the Nations progress,
spurred Tata Steel and other Tata companies to understand the significance of a dedicated
training institute, much before any government or private institutes were set up. As early
as in 1954, Tata Steel set up a Staff Training Institute for its employees.

Tata |
Prior to the launch of the institute, Mr G Y Mangrulker,
Superintendent of Training, was sent to study management training methods under John
Marsh, then Director of the Industrial Welfare Society, U.K. On his return, Mr Mangrulker
was appointed Staff Training Officer and headed the first ever organised training
programme in supervision and management.
The first Management Development Course for executives was
undertaken by the institute in June 1962. A residential programme, it was held at the
premises of the Management Training Institute of Hindustan Steel at Ranchi. In 1976, the
institute was moved to its current campus at the XLRI campus and was rechristened Tata
Management Development Centre (TMDC).

| The Vhairman, Mr Ratan Tata congratulates
TMDC for its services to the company |
TMDC is a well known name among Indian corporates today.
Over a period of time it has devised and formulated a whole spectrum of programmes
catering to the varied needs of Tata Steel and its associate companies. Though almost all
its programmes cater to managerial and executive needs, some have been designed to meet
the requirements of supervisors as well. In 2003-04, it conducted 330 programmes covering
6500 participants. TMDC also invites faculty from across the country to conduct
specialised programmes as well as benefits from the proximity is has with XLRI and its
faculty.
To encourage and inspire the faculty and staff of TMDC, the
Chairman visited the institute on March 3, 2004. |
