Meishan Steel China benefits from
Tata Steel's expertise

The members of the team from Tata Steel is rewarded for making their mark in china

Tata Steel’s expertise as a steelmaker as well as its position as a world class steel company was recently acknowledged when Meishan Steel, China, sought technical assistance from it.

The Chinese steel maker was faced with the problem of attaining a 0.010% phosphorous level from input hot metal containing more than 0.2% of it, along with silicon levels of 0.3%. The iron making unit of the company is very old. Its steel making, continuous casting and hot strip mill though recent, have been set up with second hand equipment.

The technical experts appointed by Meishan attempted to solved the problem but the effort proved futile. It then asked Tata Steel to assist since the company has extensive experience in the area.

The company has planned an ambitious product mix for which low phosphorous steel making is necessary. The technical experts appointed by it attempted to solve the problem but the effort proved futile. It, then, asked Tata Steel to assist since the company has extensive experience with blowing similar hot metal phosphorous conditions.

A team of three members, comprising M/s Debasis Das, Satyajit Sanyal and S N Singh, from LD #2 were nominated by the company to travel to Meishan. The metallurgists studied the problems and developed a solution for the various input conditions to ensure consistent turndown conditions. Meishan, thus, achieved the targeted Phosphorous levels.

For their excellent work and the laurels that they brought Tata Steel, the trio were felicitated by the Managing Director, Mr B Muthuraman at the General Dialogue held on February 20. They were also awarded citations and presented laptop computers.
