Excerpts from the Managing Director, Mr B Muthuraman’s speech on April 1, 2007.

My congratulations to all of you, to each and every one of you for taking this Company to another level of success. There have been some very good performances; there have been some very good all-time records. Right from Raw Materials, Noamundi, Joda, West Bokaro, Jharia, Sukinda, into Works, all the departments of the Works, and all the service departments, like the Sports department, Tata Steel Rural Development Society, Tata Main Hospital, down into the marketing area into every nook and corner of this country, and wherever in the world we are currently present.

So, congratulations to all of you for creating a very, very outstanding year and making this Company grow from year to year, every year. People are the strength of Tata Steel. It is the innovative spirit of the people and it is the 'Will To Win' that we all have in our minds, how we handle failures and come out on top with great success. All this, you know, finally goes down to the spirit of the people, the team-work of the people, and the leadership demonstrated by many of you. This is what has resulted in Tata Steel being what it is today. But, I also believe that this Company has taken on some huge challenges. You know, the difficulty of the work depends upon where you want to go. If you want to run a 100 m in 12 seconds, I think, you and I can do that.

Dear Reader,

Tata Steel has once again concluded a fiscal on a new high. It is an achievement that calls for rejoicing not only by the employees but also all stakeholders of the Company. Like a true champion, your Company believes in competing with itself and hence, the performance bar keeps on going up, or rather it keeps getting stretched, each year. And every year the Company ends up doing better than in the previous year. I am sure we will surpass the targets set for FY ‘08 and we will continue to ride high.

The icing on the cake of last year’s performance was to be declared the “World’s Best Steel Makers” by World Steel Dynamics, three times in a row, a hat-trick that speaks volumes about Tata Steel’s ability to perform consistently.

The new fiscal will witness a marked increase in Tata Steel’s presence in new geographies, through the organic and inorganic routes, as a result of the steps taken by it last year. Needless to say, by synergizing and partnering with ‘new-members-in-the-family’ in these locations, Tata Steel will continue to grow from strength to strength.
