Mr B Muthuraman

“Safety is a leadership issue more than anything else,” the Managing Director, Mr B Muthuraman told all the listeners on his video-cast MD Online. “Whatever is being done is insufficient and each individual must focus on safety more and more so that it becomes our first nature,” he emphasized. The seriousness with which Mr Muthuraman is pursuing greater Safety consciousness in the Company can be gauged from the fact that Mr Muthuraman announced the Company’s decision to link annual bonuses to Safety performance across the Company. The cut will apply to all irrespective of location, work and position.

Solution for Sales, the new buzzword in Marketing, under the Theory of Constraints, also came into focus during the videocast. The replenishment offer – one of several parts of the programme applicable to Sales and Marketing – is being rolled out in the area of distribution. This will ensure that once a product moves off the shelf, it is replaced immediately so that the material is available when the next customer comes in. The benefit to the distributors is that their inventory will come down, freeing their capital for market activities.

Each month Tata Steel makes greater progress in the market place. Mr Muthuraman shared the recent advances made in the marketplace with all the employees. The real impact of the work done with the customers is apparent, when the prices are down,” Mr Muthuraman pointed out. “Customer Value Management, timely supply to the customers, taking delivery compliance to 100%, branding efforts and the efforts of Retail Value Management, all these have had a powerful effect,” he declared.

In response to a question from Mr R N Singh of ITS about the current levels of Tata Steel’s share price, Mr Muthuraman explained that share price is a combination of several factors. While Tata Steel has the highest market capitalization per tonne of its capacity or per tonne of sales, compared to steel companies across the world, the stock performance of the entire steel sector has lagged behind in comparison to other industries. Also, Tata Steel acts for the good of the Company and all its stakeholders not just the share market, he added.

EDITORIAL

Dear Reader,

There is a chance that when a child is asked what ‘S’ stands for, the child may end up saying ‘S’ for Superman! Superman, the legendary hero who goes everywhere and anytime he wants to, fights against all odds and makes sure that all’s well with mankind.

Tata Steel is not far behind. To the people who work here, steel can go as far as an idea can. Steel is strong, supple, useful in all walks of life. It has been the ‘tool’ in the hands of mankind with which it has tilled the soil and vanquished its rivals for centuries. Tata Steel believes that steel has the potential to recast it role and bend and flex as lifestyle changes in the future. The unveiling of the new Tata Structura brand and the launching of the steeljunction by the men-at-work is a signal that steel will continue to find usage and application in forms, shapes, colour, dimensions, etc that seem beyond imagination.

‘S’ for Superman might soon be replaced by ‘S’ for steel.

Steel News salutes the builders of Tata Structura and steeljunction
