Till November 2006, as verse after verse was being written of Tata Steel’s growth song, its tenor and tempo was defined by green-field projects. But the very moment Corus became a part of Tata Steel, not only has the tempo shot up but the song has continuously been in the news!
A truly international organisation, Corus brings its operations in six European countries and in North America to Tata Steel’s existing operations, which span India, South Africa, South Asia and South East Asia. Reflecting on Tata Steel’s investments, since they began with NatSteel Asia in 2004, has been extremely instructive in understanding the cultural fit Tata Steel has achieved. Each organisation, Corus in Europe, NatSteel in Asia Pacific, Tata Steel Thailand in Thailand and now Vietnam Industrial Investments Ltd (VII), are all top steel makers in their geographies. Their visions, throughout their rich histories, have been to enrich their product mix, move towards value-added products and maintain high ethical standards.
Therefore, even while the Chairman Mr Ratan Tata, spoke of taking the Tata values and philosophies to the new entities, the preconditions that made them eminently eligible for becoming a part of the Tata family were their own cultures of health, safety and welfare of employees, commitment to social development, responsible business practices, diversity and equality, enabling them to seamlessly merge with Tata Steel.
However, the defining match in their DNAs must certainly have been the highly committed and dedicated workforce, which has a passion for steel. |
