JAMSHEDPUR RESOUNDS TO THE BEAT OF SPORTS
 
Over the past few months the steel city of Jamshedpur has been unlike ever before. Everyday virtually thousands of people have been heading for the JRD Tata Complex to watch international sportsperson, children and veterans compete for top honours at competitions organised or supported by Tata Steel. The happiest have been school children, representing 25 schools of the steel city, who have been given the opportunity to hold the Annual Sports Days at the world-class JRD Tata Sports Complex. This winter the company has resolved to take its commitment to "improve the quality of life of its employees and the communities we serve" to new heights through the promotion of Sports.

Young minds exercise skill and strategy

Strategy, skill, foresight and bravery were all put to test at the 4th edition of the Tata International Open Chess Tournament held at Jamshedpur from October 12 to 20, 2003. Over 300 participants, eleven Grandmasters and twelve International Grandmasters dueled for the top honours.

Organised jointly by Tata Steel and the East Singhbhum District Chess Association, the tournament carries a prize money of Rs 3.5 lakhs for 72 winners in seven different age categories. The tournament is a big attraction for chess players both in India and overseas.

The youngest player at the tournament was seven-year-old Sahaj Grover of Delhi, who went on to win the Best Player prize for his category. The oldest at 65 years was Mr N N Choudhury, who also won the Senior Citizen Award.

The winner of the tournament was International Grand Master Dibyendu Barua. Mr Niroop Mahanty, Vice President, HRM gave away the prizes to the winners.

The First Inter Training Centre Athletic Competition for Under-20 athletes was organised by the Sports Department of the company to infuse a sense of competition among the three athletic training centres of the company. These centres include JRD Tata Sports Complex Athletic Centre, C D & S W Athletic Centre and TSRDS Athletic Centre.

This new initiative has generated great enthusiasm among the trainees. It covers disciplines such as long jump, shot put, 300 metres race, high jump, 100 metres race, 1200 metre race, high jump, and medley relay. The one-day competition also encouraged them to develop greater team spirit and aim for record breaking performances.
 

Seven medals for athletes
at zonal meet
The Tata Steel Athletic Training Centre team won seven medals at the recently concluded 15th Junior National Athletic Championships . The trainees won medals in the 1500 metre, 1500 metre, 2000 metre and 5000 metre events as well as the 110 metre hurdles. In addition, they performed well and secured a place in the hammer throw and high jump.
 
Sub Joniors shoot best

National Meet
In their best performance ever at the national level, cadets of the Tata Archery Academy won 26 medals, including nine golds at the Sub Junior National Archery Championship held at Bangalore during November. Among the girls the pick of the team was Mahamaya Mihiracharya, while among the boys Ranjit Kumar outperformed their team mates.
