| The track is inaugurated in a novel way |
While the rest of the country was praying for rain, Tata
Steel's Sports Department was for once hoping that it would set in a couple of days late.
This was because a 8-lane poly urethane synthetic athletic track, imported by the company
from Australia for India's top athletes to train on, was being laid at the J R D Tata
Sports Complex. The International Amateur Athletic Association has certified the track.
The company sought the support of the government to make it
possible to import the new track. As soon as permission was granted, work began. The
Managing Director of the company inaugurated the new track on June 25 by jogging down a
small stretch. The Sports Complex is to host the 43rd Senior Inter-State Athletics
Championship from September 5 to 8, this year.
