New homes for victims of hail storm
 
Mr K Midha of Tata Relief  Committee takes personal care in the reconstruction work

A severe hail storm had completely ravaged the homes of many villagers in the vicinity of Jamshedpur. After rushing in emergency help, the rata Relief Committee was assigned the task of helping reb'uild the homes of 1400 beneficiaries in ten villages.

On April 30, CGI sheets were distributed to the first of the villages, Nagardih, covering over 100 beneficiaries. A survey is in progress in the rest of the villages and the company has arranged for technical assistance for fixing the sheets as well as tiles for them. rata Relief Committee is making every effort to ensure that all the homes are rebuilt before the monsoons set in.

W!th the selection of Richards Bay. with an efficient port structure and minimisation of logistics cost, Tata Steel is poised to become the only ferro chrome producer in the world to have a multi-locale supply base. This selection of the South African township came about after a detailed on-site evaluation of countries worldwide for their long-term sustainability of ferro chrome production and  discussion with their respective governments- During his visit to South Africa in February, the Managing Director, Mr. B Muthuraman met with management consultants KPMG to discuss the path forward and the economic fundamentals of South Africa. He also took part in the first Public Participation Programme at Richards Bay. His presentation was well receiVed, in an area sensitive to the environmental impact of industry.

Tata Steel evaluated the status of its chromite business in a systematic manner to explore growth possibilities. It has a significant share of the global market in the business and its Sukinda Chromite Mine is the second largest Open Cast Mine for chromite globally. It is also the first producer from Asia to earn "main producer status" in Europe and Japan.
