It is the story of a successful journey, spanning 50 years,
marked by foresight, enterprise and the ability to understand the ever changing demands of
the customer and the Indian market. Homes, irrigation works, cold storage and closed
structurals across the country all use Tata Steel pipes. The history of the tubes business
in India began in 1935 with the first continuous Weld Mill being commissioned and the
first FM tubes rolled out of the companys Works.
Prior to this, the countrys tube requirements were
met by imports, an extremely expensive purchase for the nation. With the signing of an
agreement between Tata Steel and Stewarts & Lloyds of UK in 1937, to manufacture and
sell tubes from steel supplied by Tata Steel, the first step towards self-reliance was
taken by the nation. Due to the disruption caused by World War II , the Indian Tube
Company, the predecessor of the Tubes SBU was formed much later in 1954.
In 1986, the company became a wholly domestic enterprise with
British Steel disinvesting its stake and the company merging with Tata Steel to become its
Tubes Division.
With a production capacity of two lakh tonnes per annum
today, the companys Tubes SBU is the largest manufacturer of tubes in the country.
In the run-up to the 50th year of tube making in the country, the Unit has launched a year
long celebration.
Today, it is ranked among the top five Tata Group business
units and has won the Groups prestigious Tata Business Excellence Model Award.
