The socio-economic impact of disability on a family is extremely severe. In India, approximately 22 million people are unable to participate in their families, communities or in social activities as a consequence of their disabilities. They have to surmount untold difficulties and obstacles to enjoy even a small fraction of the quality of life enjoyed by the able-bodied. The most adversely affected are the rural poor, many of who suffer from curable disabilities but lack the economic means to correct this situation.
