As one drives through the Steel Works, the transformation that it has undergone is evident at every turn. Every initiative undertaken - visual management, safety, environment management, capacity expansions - has left an indelible imprint. The Steel Works at Jamshedpur exudes a state-of-the-art look and feel, worthy of the world’s sixth largest steel maker. The Steel Works was originally constructed for a capacity of 160,000 tonnes of pig iron, 100,000 tonnes of ingot steel, 70,000 tonnes of rails, beams and snaps and 20,000 tonnes of bars, hoops and rods - a momentous idea at a time when no heavy industry existed in India.
Tata Steel’s visionary leadership has ensured constant growth for the Company through modernisation and expansion of its Steel Works such that today it has set its sights on a capacity of 10 MTPA. From a Company with an aging steel plant in the late 1980s, Tata Steel had, by the year 2000, transformed its steel works into one of the most modern steel plant.
