In-house transfer of technology by R&D

Realising that the need of the hour was to get more coke from the amount of coal available, the Coke Plant and R&D worked together and successfully implemented partial briquette blending in the top charged coke batteries. This technique had been tried on a laboratory / pilot plant scale in R&D in 1982. It found commercial application after 20 years ! The coal briquetting machine available in the Coal and Coke Testing Laboratory of R&D was put into operation in the Coke Plant. The coal and binder mixing process as well as the briquette making process were suitably modified to give briquettes of the desired size and strength in the plant.

Use of briquettes along with coal in the conventional top charged batteries enhanced the oven throughput and gave rise to better coke with respect to CSR. This method can, in the long run, also enable use of non coking / weakly coking coals in the form of briquettes in the top charging batteries. The plant has started using only 1% of coal briquettes in the charge owing to the limited capacity (1.5 tonnes per hour) of the briquetting unit available at present. R&D results had shown that there is a potential to go up to 30% briquette usage.

This method can be a stepping-stone towards achieving 4.5 million tonnes hot metal production. Aage badhenge saath mein, tarein pakdenge haath mein (we will progress together and catch the stars with our hands).
