The place was enveloped in celebratory spirit. More than 2000 people had gathered together
in the Works General Office lawn. They waited with bated breath. There was expectation in
the air. Many wondered what was in store during the evening. At 7 pm, the ASPIRE
(ASPirational Initiatives to Retain Excellence) (Hamari Aakansha in Hindi) Programme was
launched by the Managing Director of Tata Steel, Mr. B Muthuraman, in the presence of the
President of the Tata Workers Union, Mr. R B B Singh. It was Friday, the 2nd of May 2003. A blue flame from the Coke Ovens broke the
blue-black hue of the sky, as myriads of stars twinkled beyond the skyline of Tata Steel.
There was romance in the air Robert Browning was quoted. As the Function began, the
lights of the Steel Plant silently glittered in the background and the roar of steel
production in the Factory bore testimony to the new task at hand. It was exactly a year
ago, on an emotionally charged evening in May 2002 that Mr. B Muthuraman, Mr. R B B Singh
and a multitude of Tata Steel employees, invoked the vision of the Founder Jamsetji Tata,
as they pledged to make the Company EVA+ by 2007.
In less than a year, Tata Steel has
become EVA positive. Quite understandably, there is a sense of pride and satisfaction,
even as the Company sets its sights higher and higher. It is already talking about
expansion a capacity. The challenge facing Tata Steel today is to sustain its performance.
It intends doing this through ASPIRE. The Programme seeks to unleash and enhance the
creative potential of all Tata Steels employees through a combination of the best
practices and improvement methodologies. ASPIRE is set to take Tata Steel, a company
recognised for its people-friendliness in the last ten years, closer to being truly EVA+
by sheer hard work in an ambience of harmonious industrial relationship, stretching beyond
ninety years. The ASPIRE Anthem declares : Aage badhernge saath mein, Tarein pakdenge
haath mein, Number One banenge ispat mein, Aspire! Aspire!! (We will work together to go
forward, (we will) catch te stars in our journey to be Number One in steel, Aspire!
Aspire!!)
