Steel Making and Casting (SMC) Research Group

The Steel Making and Casting Research Group provide its services primarily to the steelmaking shops LD #1, LD #2 and upcoming LD #3 along with related Technology Groups. The group also provides its services to the Blast Furnaces, Cold Rolling Mill, Wire Rod Mill, Wire Division and Tube Division.

The SMC group concentrates on three areas:

  • Steelmaking - Development of new and improvement of existing steelmaking processes to produce high quality liquid steel at lowest cost including environmental and recycling aspect

  • Casting - Development of new and improvement of existing processes of continuous casting to produce high quality semi-finished steel products (slabs, billets, etc.)

  • Process Modeling - Physical and numerical modeling of heat & mass transfer processes in steel industry, especially steelmaking and casting.

The group uses various techniques such as water modeling, numerical modeling using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and heat transfer, high temperature experimentation, statistical techniques, computational thermodynamics etc. to resolve many of the plant related problems.
