Materials Characterization and Joining (MCJ) Research Group

Materials have character too. The characteristics of materials determine their value and demand in the market. The iron and steel business deals with raw material like iron ore and coal; intermediate products like ferroalloys, sinter, pellets and refractories; and finished products like steel sheets and wires. The mineral contents, their distribution and phases determine their character. After mining, the beneficiation process flow sheet is developed based on the inherent features of the minerals. The MCJ Group has the expertise to characterize minerals using advanced equipment like the scanning electron microscope (SEM) with EDS, X-Ray diffraction and QEMScan.

The MCJ Group also carries out advanced characterization and performance evaluation of products. In today’s context, products are endowed with multifarious features, including microstructural phases, cleanliness levels, and mechanical properties. Product evaluation is done through optical microscopy, SEM, EBSD and XRD and performance evaluation of products by thermo-mechanical simulation (Gleeble) and mechanical characterization (fracture, fatigue).

MCJ Group is also involved in Product Development with focus on welding solution and joining applications in the area of automotive, construction and tubes. Since all steels need to be welded, the weldability conditions are developed for both flat and long products. The MCJ Group also provides application support to end customers on difficult to weld steels.
