October 8, 2002 www.tatasteel.com, the Tata
Steel website, has been declared the winner of the IISI People's Choice Award by
International Iron & Steel Institute (IISI) at its summit in Rome. This award has been
given to Tata Steel in the steel producer category at the annual (edition 2002) website
competition. In the other category i.e. portal category, Jernkontoret has bagged the first
prize. POSCO has been adjudged the best site, for the second time, in the Judges' Choice
Award.
The IISI, is a world forum dealing solely with the steel industry, was founded in 1967
and has its headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. The IISI seeks to help steel industries and
associated organisations by providing access to the latest technical and economic;
opportunity to obtain data on industry performance; opportunity to become involved at
international level in common market development programmes and government relations on
environmental issues.
The Tata Steel website, now bilingual (Hindi and English), seeks to address the needs
of a wide range of stakeholders. The objective of the website is to provide a two-way
communication channel between the company and the stakeholders and to update them on the
steps taken by the company to realise its Vision and Mission. The steel company believes
that the 'Challenge Lies In Changing' and the communication of this constitute the very
purpose of our website.
Each link on the site has been designed to cater to a particular group of stakeholders
and hence they carry very specific information on a well-defined area/process of the
company. The site also attracts business queries, which benefits the company in reaching
out to new customers and markets. The links on the site attempt to provide the latest
innovation adopted and initiatives taken by the company in a key area, performance
production and financial, products, environment management, corporate sustainability
initiatives, technology, press releases, careers, marketing and sales reach, etc. The site
also carries valuable information on the company's rich heritage and archives, which
instils pride among all stakeholders in their association with Tata Steel. Care has been
taken that the information hosted on the website is updated regularly, it is accurate and

In Tata Steel, the net has become an important tool of communication and the Intranet
of the company, available even in remote out-locations, is fully leveraged to integrate
the employees and keep them abreast with the happenings across the company. The Intranet
is used for virtual dialogues between the MD and the employees. This is conducted with the
help of web streams, video conferencing and on-line dialling.
