Rapar (Kutch), July 30, 2002 Tata Relief Committee today, at a simple ceremony held at
the Rapar Taluka in Kutch donated Twenty School Buildings to the Government of
Gujarat. Shri Dhirubhai Shah, Hon'ble Speaker, Gujarat Legislative Assembly,
the Chief Guest on the occasion was handed over the first of the twenty school
buildings by Mr.A.N.Singh, Dy.Managing Director (Corporate Services) Tata Steel
& Chairman, Tata Relief Committee.
TRC has completed this challenging and an ambitious rehabilitation project of
constructing 20 school buildings consisting of 123 classrooms in Rapar Taluka, one
of the worst affected areas during the earthquake, which struck Gujarat on January
26, 2001 in a record time of just eight months. The then hon'ble chief minister, Shri
Keshubhai Patel laid the foundation stone in the month of May last year.
The school buildings are designed and constructed according to rigid engineering
standards, which can withstand any natural calamities including an earthquake. TRC has
also donated furniture for children and teachers like benches, tables & chairs etc.
TRC has also undertaken tree plantation and provided playground equipment and internal
electrification with fans etc. so that the building can be used as a community centres as
well after the school hours and on holidays.
The Government of Gujarat contributed money per classroom for 99 classrooms in 17
primary school buildings. Other contributions were from Chennai based Murugappa group and
Gujarati Samaj, Jamshedpur. Over and above this the employees of Tata Steel contributed
their one-day's salary for the cause.
After the devastating earthquake, the Tata group companies spent in emergency relief
and rehabilitation work in Gujarat. Mr. Ratan Tata, Group Chairman, TATA Group himself
visited the region immediately after the earthquake and spent whole day supervising and
monitoring activities undertaken by the Tata Relief Committee.
Tata Relief Committee was founded by the Tata Group companies and associates based in
Jamshedpur in 1974 with an aim to provide relief and timely emergency help to those in
distress. Since its inception, TRC has provided relief and rehabilitation to the victims
of natural disasters across the country. TRC has successfully accomplished its mission
winning appreciation for its services for earthquake ravaged regions of Uttarkashi, Latur,
Jabalpur and Gujarat, the cyclone ravaged east coast of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh and more
recently the rehabilitation program for super cyclone affected people of Orissa.
