Tata Steel finished the year with numerous records and remarkable
achievements. Most of the units and facilities under the million tonne expansion project
were commissioned during the year. It was indeed a challenge to handle so many
commissionings in a running plant and yet, dramatically increase the production. The
financial year witnessed record production of hot metal, crude steel and saleable steel.
Hot metal at 5.177 mt, crude steel at 4.729 mt, and saleable steel at 4.520 mt, an
increase of 19%, 15%, and 10%, respectively, as compared to the figures of the last
financial year. Many major milestones, like crossing the 5 mt mark for hot metal and 3 mt
for Hot Strip Mill were also achieved during this financial year. The overall productivity
this year is 326 t/man/year, an increase of 21% as compared to that of last year.
The raw materials division continued their outstanding performance. West Bokaro reduced
the clean coal ash from 15 to 13%. The impact was seen in the reduction of the use of
imported coal from 46% last financial year to 31% in this financial year. The mines
division achieved the best ever iron ore production and despatch of 10.3 and 10.5 mt
respectively, this year. Most of the other divisions / departments also attained their
best ever annual production.
The performance of Marketing and Sales division was also dotted with many significant
achievements. The supplies of flat products to the automobile industry, 680 thousand
tonnes, was a record. This sales performance was supported by the 1.2 million tonnes Cold
Rolling Mill churning out a record volume of 1.495 million tonnes. Discerning customers
like Toyota, Honda and Bajaj Auto adjudged Tata Steel as Best Supplier. Other
noteworthy achievements include pioneering initiatives like the launch of
steeljunction at Kolkata and selling of rebars by length.
The Profit centres of the steel company also achieved many records. The gross turnover of
Tubes Division made a recordable mark for the first time during this year. At 0.225 mt,
the total finished production from Tubes was 23% higher as compared to the figures of last
financial year. The Bearings Division produced 28 million bearings, an increase of 12% as
compared to that of last financial year. The Ferro Alloys and Mineral Division (FAMD) has
also surpassed its previous best performance by producing 30.23 Lakh tonnes (Previous best
20.26 lakh tonnes in the FY05) of minerals and 2.24 lakh tonnes of Ferro Alloys this year.
