Tata Steel’s H1, 2004-05 Production Performance

Jamshedpur - October 01, 2004

An all time high hot metal, crude steel and saleable steel production marked the completion of H1, FY05 for Tata Steel. The saleable steel production stood at 2.09 MT, 4% higher than the volumes in the corresponding period last year.

The initiative to enrich the product mix of Tata Steel continues to provide excellent results. The supplies to the Auto Sector comprising of HR, CR and Galvanized products was up by 41% as against last year and the overall steel supplies to the OE sector was up by 24%. Compared to the figures of first half of last financial year, the sale of branded products, Tata Shakti (corrugated galvanized sheets) and Tata Steelium (cold rolled sheets) witnessed an increase in sales of 16% and 23%, respectively.

The G blast furnace due for rebuilding was to go down in middle of October 2004. The condition of blast furnace was critically reviewed in the month of July and certain steps were taken to prolong its life. It has now been decided to shutdown the furnace sometime in early December 2004. It is estimated that the upgradation of this Blast Furnace will take 100 days as against 105 days taken for the same activity, in 2002, for the relatively smaller F-Blast Furnace.
