Suggestion Initiative at Tata Steel Reaps Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskar
The Awards Committee of the Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskar 1999 has selected Mr M K Jha, Assistant Foreman, (IEM), and Mr. U K Singh, Assistant Foreman, (IEM), from LD Shop # 1 for the Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskar organised by the Ministry of Labour, Government of India.

Mr Jha and Mr Singh had observed that faulty usage of lance in LD vessels resulted in damage to the tip of the lance and in plant outage. The cost to the company due to such outage was estimated at Rs 3.9 lakhs. Besides, the damage to the lance tip was a potential risk as it could cause leakage inside the vessel and lead to a disaster. The suggestion made by them based on their studies resulted in elimination of faulty usage and ensured better availability of the vessel. It also minimised the risk of leakage.

The awards ceremony was held at New Delhi on Monday, the 17th September 2001.
