CITATION
The Prime Minister's Trophy for the best integrated steel plant in
India for the year 1998-99 has been awarded to the Tata Iron and Steel Company Limited,
Jamshedpur (Tata Steel). Tata Steel has been adjudged to be the best steel plant for the
second time since this Trophy was instituted in 1992-93.
In the backdrop of the challenges facing a liberalised economy, Tata
Steel has risen to the occasion and has set up an excellent pace of technological
innovation. Tata Steel has taken on itself to become the lowest cost producer of steel in
the world and has worked in a sustained manner towards this end. Continuous modernisation,
coupled with visionary leadership, creativity and knowledge application is enabling Tata
Steel to reach the goal. In areas of capacity utilisation, growth in production,
efficiency of operation, environment management, customer satisfaction and the overall
enthusiasm among the employees, Tata Steel has distinguished itself as a trend setter and
a steel plant comparable with the best in the world. Exemplary industrial relations
prevailing in the organisation have provided a framework of peace and mutual understanding
for taking the Company forward in all respects.
In recognition of its outstanding performance, the Prime Minister's
Trophy for the year 1998-99 is hereby presented to Tata Iron & Steel Company Limited
on this day, the 13th December, 2000, by Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Prime
Minister of India.
