Dr. T. Mukherjee, Executive Director (Operations), Tata
Steel was conferred the National Metallurgist Award (NMA) - 2000 at the National
Metallurgists' Day celebrations held today at Bhilai. Dr. Mukherjee is the second
recipient of this award from Tata Steel. The award was earlier conferred upon Dr. Jamshed
J Irani, Managing Director, Tata Steel in 1997, the year the award was instituted by the
Ministry of Steel, Government of India.
The NMA this year has been conferred jointly upon Dr Tridibesh
Mukherjee, Executive Director, Tata Steel and Dr Placid Rodrigues, Director, Indira Gandhi
Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam. The Award has been given to Dr T Mukherjee in
recognition of his original contribution made in the last ten years in the field of
production, research, design, development and environment. The award, conferred annually,
carries a cash prize alongwith a certificate and a citation. Dr Mukherjee has also won the
Metallurgist of the Year Award, Visvesvaraya Gold Medal, the IIM Platinum Medal, etc.
Dr Mukherjee joined Tata Steel in 1971 as Research and Development
Engineer. He began his career in the steel industry at the Special Steel Products Division
of British Steel Corporation after completing his Masters Degree in 1965 and Ph D in
1967 from University of Sheffield. He obtained a first class degree in Metallurgical
Engineering from Calcutta University in 1965.
