Tata Steel initiates set-up of Mid-Day Meal Kitchen for West Singhbhum, Jharkhand

~Designed to cater meals to 63000 students from 523 schools across 8 blocks of the West Singhbhum district~

The ground-breaking ceremony for Mid-Day Meal Kitchen for West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand took place at Zila School Chaibasa today. The programme was hosted by Tata Steel, through its delivery arm, Corporate Social Responsibility, in the presence of its project partners, the Government of Jharkhand, and Annamitra Foundation.

The traditional ground-breaking ceremony and unveiling of the plaque was done by Mr Arava Rajkamal, IAS, Deputy Commissioner (DC), West Singhbhum, as the Chief Guest on the occasion, in the presence of Mr Sunil Bhaskaran, Vice President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel, Mr Tarun Daga, Managing Director, JUSCO, Mr Sanjay Tikku, Vice Chairman, Annamirta Foundation, Mr Sourav Roy, Chief, Corporate Social Responsibility, senior government officials and officials of Tata Steel. The Memorandum of Agreements to this effect were signed on this occasion.

The mid-day meal project at West Singhbhum, takes cue from the success of its similar project at Jamshedpur which is presently serving meals each day to nearly 52,000 students across 428 schools in the East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand. The Mid-Day Meal Kitchen project for West Singhbhum district will help provide mid-day meals to around 63000 students from 523 schools across 8 blocks of West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.

Appreciating the response and initiative by Tata Steel, Mr Rajkamal said: “West Singhbhum district in Jharkhand will be benefitted through our efforts towards leverage its health quotient. We are happy to collaborate with Annamrita and Tata Steel in providing quality nourishment to our young population and assure the team of all support towards operationalising this project.”

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Bhaskaran said: “We stand committed in partnering the progress of our communities. The mid-day meal, once operational will help further this cause by ensuring that the young children of our neighbourhood are well-nourished in the process of their education.”

The Kitchen, with the schools it will cater, will also be a marquee development initiative on the Jamshedpur – Kalinganagar corridor. The overall cost for setting up the kitchen will be over Rs10 Cr. upon completion. While the land, to the tune of 1.8 acres has been provided by the Government of Jharkhand, Tata Steel will take charge of setting up the infrastructure. Annamitra will thereafter look into the everyday operations of the Kitchen, which is set to begin 13 months from the present day.
