Sukinda Chromite Mine (SCM) of Tata Steel, located in Sukinda Block of Jajapur district of Odisha bagged four awards during Half Yearly Safety Week Celebrations organised under the aegis of Director General of Mine safety (DGMS), Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, Bhubaneswar region. SCM received the first prize in Electrical Safety, Code of Practices / Safe Operating Procedure of Heavy Earth Moving Machinery Maintenance (HEMMs) and Monsoon Preparedness and second prize in Penetration of OMMS Application in the mine.

Prof Arvind Mishra of ISM Dhanbad, Chief Guest at the function organized on the occasion at Bhubaneswar, Guest of Honours Mr S Roychoudhury, GM, Safety, MCL, Prof G K Pradhan of Satna University and Mr R Subramanium, Director, Mines Safety, DGMS, Bhubaneswar gave away the awards.

Mr R R Satpathy, General Manager, Operations, Ferro Alloys and Minerals Division, Tata Steel, Mr Rajesh Patel, Chief, Mining, SCM, Mr Sabysachi Mishra, Head, SCM, other officers of the company were present on the occasion.

Best practices of different mines were shared in the presentation made from June 1 to June 10, 2017 across all the mines of Bhubaneswar region of DGMS including Chromite mines in Sukinda valley, Bauxite mines, Limestone mines, Graphite, Quartzite, granite mines and decorative stones mines in Berhampur area. Total 35 mines and 250 mine workers participated in the safety week celebrations held on August 26, 2017.

To promote safety in the mining industry, Half Yearly Safety Week is being celebrated by DGMS in the region for the second time. This is a first of its kind initiative in the country which started by DGMS, Bhubaneswar region in the year 2016-17.

For its excellent track record in safety, SCM was conferred with National Safety Awards by the Ministry of Labour Employment at an event in New Delhi on August 17, 2017 for ‘Longest Accident Free Period’ for the year 2013 by Hon’ble President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind.
