Mr H M Nerurkar conferred with Honorary Doctorate by KIIT University

Mr H M Nerurkar, Managing Director, Tata Steel, has been conferred with an Honorary Degree of Doctorate by KIIT University. Mr Nerurkar received the Doctorate degree from the Chancellor of KIIT University, Prof. R P Kaushik, in the presence of the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Dr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, and other dignitaries.

The Doctorate was conferred on to him during the 7th Annual Convocation of KIIT University held at Bhubaneswar today. Mr Nerurkar was conferred the Doctorate in recognition of his contribution to the field of metallurgical engineering, especially iron & steel, and his significant contribution in the domain of management.

Other recipients of the Degree of Doctorate (Honoris Causa) today included Dr D Y Patil, Governor of Tripura, Prof C N R Rao, Chairman, Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, Dr Narendra Jadhav, Member, Planning Commission & National Advisory Council, Govt. of India, Mr Ram Jethmalani, Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of India and Member of Rajya Sabha, and Ms Pinky Anand, Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of India.

Mr Nerurkar was Executive Director of India and South East Asia of Tata Steel Limited since April 9, 2009 and was appointed as Managing Director of Tata Steel Limited from October 1, 2009. A B Tech in Metallurgical Engineering from the College of Engineering, Pune University, Mr Nerurkar has attended several management courses in India and overseas, including CEDEP in France. He is associated with several professional organizations, such as Indian Institute of Metals, INSDAG and AIMA, among others.

Mr Nerurkar joined Tata Steel on February 1,1982 and has held various positions including Chief Metallurgist, Senior Divisional Manager (LD-1), Deputy General Manager (Steel & Primary Mills), General Manager (Marketing), Senior General Manager (Supply Chain) and Chief Operating Officer. He has over 35 years of experience in the steel industry across various functions. Mr. Nerurkar is an executive with multifaceted experience ranging from Project Execution, Manufacturing, Quality Control, Supply Chain and Marketing. He became Vice President (Flat Products), Tata Steel, in November 2002 and, in September 2007, was appointed Chief Operating Officer of the Company. During his illustrious career, Mr. Nerurkar has been conferred with several prestigious awards such as the 'Tata Gold Medal 2004', 'SMS Demag Excellence Award 2002', Steel 80's Award - 1990', 'SAIL Gold Medal - 1989' Visveswaraya Award - 1988', 'NMD Award 1987' and CEO of the Year Award-2011 by Indian Institute of Materials Management (IIMM).

With more than 17,000 students pursuing under graduate and post-graduate studies in engineering, MCA, management, law, bio-technology, MBBS, BDS, nursing, fashion technology, cinema and media studies and language, KIIT stands out one of the finest universities of India. KIIT was conferred the University status in 2004 by the ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India in recognition of its excellence.
