Tata Archers make India proud with their outstanding performance at the 4th World Cup Archery Championship

Archers from Tata Archery Academy, Tata Steel, have proved their mettle, once again, at the 4th World Cup Archery held at Shangai, China between 31st August and 4th September, 2010. The following archers from the Tata camp were part of the Indian Archery team at the World Cup:

Men Recurve Team:
Jayant Talukdar – Tata Steel
Rahul Banerjee - Tata Steel

Women Recurve Team:
Deepika Kumari – TAA Cadet
Rimil Buruily – TAA Cadet

The Indian Men Recurve Team comprising Jayant, Rahul and Tarundeep Rai (Services) bagged the Gold Medal by beating Japan in the finals by 224-220. It may be mentioned that Japan had beaten its strong contender, Korea, in the Semi-finals by 224-216 to reach the finals. Indian Men’s Team beat China in the semi-finals by 222-214.

Mr Jayant Talukdar kept India's hopes alive in the Men Recurve Individual Category by defeating the last Olympic Champion, Victor Ruben of Ukraine, in Quarter finals though he lost to Chang Hwan Lee of Korea in the Semi-finals. Yet, he regained his confidence and went on to defeat World Cup-2009 Final Champion, Marco Galliazo of Italy, at the Bronze Medal tie, with a big margin of 7-3 to bag the Bronze Medal for India.

Miss Deepika Kumari, the teenage sensation of Indian Archery started her career in this sport discipline only in 2008. She went on to become the World Cadet (Sub-Junior) Champion in July 2009 at Ogden (USA) and was member of the Indian Women’s Team in the 3rd leg of World Cup at Ogden in August 2010 to win Team Silver medal for India.

Ranked 13th in the qualifying round at Shangai, she was pitted against Veronika of Germany to beat her in straight sets in 1/32 round. She defeated Christiansen of Denmark in 1/16 match, Y. Zhang of China in 1/8 match, K. Lorig of USA in quarter finals, Hui Ju Wu of Chinese Taipei in Semi Finals to meet Bo Bae Ki of Korea in the Finals. Deepika lost the finals to settle for the Individual Silver medal for the Country.

Miss Rimil Buruily was ranked 19th in the qualifying round to play against Miss A. Subramaniam of Malaysia in 1/32 round where she lost.

Shri Jayant Talukdar and Miss Deepika Kumari have qualified for the World Cup finals at Edinburgh (GB) to be held on 18th & 19th September, 2010. It may be mentioned that after Miss Dola Banerjee, Miss Deepika has become the 2nd Indian Women to compete in the World Finals.

On the basis of their performance in the five consecutive selection trials conducted by Archery Association at SAI NSEC Kolkata, the following Archers have been finally selected to represented India in the Commonwealth Games 2010 and Asian Games 2010
