July 23, 2009

29th July happens to be the birth day of the doyen of Indian industry and the great visionary J R D Tata. His ethical values and commitment to the well being of society have inspired the Tata group of industries. The entire group strongly believes in high ethical standards and their systems have evolved around these values. Tata Steel observes the month of July as "Ethics Month" in honor of this great personality.

This year the female employees of Tata Steel decided to pay homage to their leader in a very noble way. A "Blood donation campaign by female employees only" was organized on the 23rd of July, 2009, at the Steelinium Hall of Tata Steel. 98 Female employees from the shop floor, those working at supervisory levels and as executives, participated whole heartedly in this program and donated blood.

To support and encourage this unique initiative Mrs. Nerurkar, wife of Mr. H M Nerurkar, ED (India & SE Asia) was present in this campaign. The program was led by Mrs. Rekha Seal, Ethics Counselor, Tata Steel, and was ably organized by Mrs. Urmila Ekka, Sr. Manager (HR / IR) Sinter Plant, Ms Neena Bahadur and Ms Rupa Kumari. Jamshedpur Blood Bank lent full support to this noble cause. The campaign was also supported by the TMH. Dr. Anita Amin was present to provide the necessary support to this noble cause.

Tata Steel through this unique initiative, not only paid homage to its great leader, but also created awareness about "Blood Donation" amongst its female employees. It also took this opportunity to identify such employees who had low hemoglobin levels, and therefore could not donate blood. It was decided to test them at TMH to find the reasons for the low hemoglobin levels and provide suitable support to improve their health and well being.
