Annual SHG Meet of Tata Steel Parivar

Bhubaneswar, March 18, 2009

The annual meeting of SHGs of Tata Steel Parivar held on March 17, 2009 at Sansailo rehabilitation colony of Tata Steel's 6 MT Integrated Steel Plant Project in Jajpur district. About 275 women members of Tata Steel Parivar from 20 women SHGs from the rehabilitation colonies of Tata Steel had participated and have put up stalls to display their SHG product in this programme. These women are involved in different livelihood activities through their SHGs and have become examples for others.

The purpose of conducting such event is to encourage the SHG members as well as build a sense of fellowship within them. During the programme, Mrs Nagari Jamunda an active member of the SHGs presented the annual report and their achievement. In a competition held between the 20 SHGs, the Nari Sangha SHG of Sansailo rehabilitation colony bagged the first prize, while the Sarjam Sakam and Maa Mangala SHG from Trijanga rehabilitation colony were honoured as second and third respectively. The award was distributed by the chief guest and other honorable guests.

Besides, 11 women from different SHGs were felicitated for their excellence in different fields like entrepreneurship, Utlisation of cash in lieu, utilization of house building assistance, self-employment, goatry, Stone carving, Saora painting, phenyl making, stitching and community organizing.

The chief guest of the occasion was Mrs Kasturika Pattanayak an eminent social worker and former Chairperson of State Social Welfare Board of Orissa along with her the other dignitaries on the dais include, Mr K Viswanatham, Retd IAS and Chairman of Harsha trust, Mr K Behera, Manager, State Bank of India, Duburi, Mr Arvind Sinha, Chief of Construction, Tata Steel and Mrs Nandini Sarangi, Social Development Specialist, Tata Steel. Mr Ramakanta Mahanty, LAO, Kalinganagar was also present during the occasion.

During the meet short plays on adult literacy, Alcoholism, domestic violence against women and traditional dance were staged by the SHG members and the office bearers of Renaissance, engaged by Tata Steel to monitor the improvement in the lifestyle of the relocated families. About 800 audiences from Sansailo, Arasahi and nearby villages witnessed the programme.

It is worth mentioning that recently, Sarjam Sakam", an SHG from Trijanga rehabilitation colony of Tata Steel's 6MT upcoming integrated steel project in Jajpur district was awarded as one of the best SHGs in Danagadi block by the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Orissa, Shri Naveen Patnaik.

Tata Steel's Role in Creating Livelihood
Tata Steel's community outreach program touches the lives of more than 25,000 needy families in 500 villages in Orissa bringing in health care, education, livelihoods and rural infrastructure.

Tata Steel believes that it cannot exist in an island of prosperity without caring for the well being of the neighborhood in and around. Tata Steel adapts community reach out programmes that aims at improving the quality of life the people. It facilitates more than 200 women SHGs annually for income generation. The steel company has supported more than 500 rural enterprises in agriculture, poultry and goatry and Community entrepreneurship in last 15 years.

For sustainable livelihood the steel company through CAPS Foundation has initiated providing employability training to the rural youths. Because, at Tata Steel, sustainable development of Community is not just a mission statement but a living tradition and will remain so forever.
