It was a defining moment for Tata Steel as the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh visited the Steel city to participate in Tata Steel’s Centenary celebrations.

On his arrival in Jamshedpur, the Prime Minister was received at the airport by Mr. B Muthuraman, Managing Director, Tata Steel. The other dignitaries who accompanied the Prime Minister to Jamshedpur were His Excellency Syed Sibtey Razi, Honourable Governor of Jharkhand, Shri Ram Vilas Paswan, Union Minister for Chemicals, Fertilizers and Steel, Shri Madhu Kodha, Honourable Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Shri Subodh Kant Sahay, Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, Shri Jitin Prasada, Union Minister of State for Steel, Shri. Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union Minister of State for Communications. The gathering had distinguished guests from Tata Steel that included Dr. J J Irani, Director, Tata Sons, Mr. H M Nerurkar, senior management of Tata Steel and Shri. Raghunath Pandey, President, Tata Workers Union.

The function began with the plantation of a Banyan tree sapling by the Prime Minister of India, which was dedicated to the citizens of Jamshedpur. This was similar to the tree plantation which was done by Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister of India in 1958, when Tata Steel celebrated its 50th anniversary.

In his welcome address, Mr. B Muthuraman, Managing Director, Tata Steel thanked Dr. Manmohan Singh on visiting the steel city and it was a moment of pride for everyone at Tata Steel. (Detailed speech attached). While addressing the guests, Dr. Manmohan Singh congratulated Tata Steel on its milestone of completing 100 years, achievement accomplished by few. He said that Tata Steel has been a leader in steel making and it must continue to provide leadership on all fronts. (Detailed speech attached).

The Prime Minister unveiled a postage stamp that had been created as a memento by the Government of India’s Ministry of Communications to salute Tata Steel’s 100 years of selfless service to the country. It symbolises the Company’s commitment and dedication not only to trigger the industrial revolution in India in 1907 but also to continue to create benchmarks in every field that it has ventured in the last 10 decades. In his address to the gathering Shri, Jyotiraditya Scindia said that the department of post is privileged to be associated Tata Steel’s Centenary. The department has been associated with Tata Steel in most of its achievements and milestones that the steel company has achieved in the last 100 years. It is splendid to see a corporate that is driven by the philosophy of its founder which spells out “In a free enterprise, the community is not just another stakeholder in business, but is in fact, the very purpose of our existence”.

Though it was a brief visit, it was definitely an enlightening and privileged one for not only Tata Steel but also for the citizens of Jamshedpur. It was the most prestigious day for Tata Steel to be acknowledged by the Honourable Prime Minister for 100 years of selfless service to the nation. The Company has travelled a long distance without fatigue. It has kept alive the thoughts and philosophy of its Founder – J N Tata with high intensity.
