Tata Steel sets new record of crude steel production

Jamshedpur, February 25, 2006

Tata Steel has imbibed a culture of setting new records. Earlier this month on 14th, the record of best ever hot metal production of 4.47 MT in FY04was surpassed. Again, on 24th February, Tata Steel surpassed the previous best crude steel production of 4.22 MT, also set in FY04. The improved performance can be attributed to the increased availability of hot metal from its revamped ‘G’ blast furnace. Though the year saw a number of shutdowns of production units due to upgradation of a billet caster, a slab caster, furnace in the Hot Strip Mill and of various cranes, necessary for its 1 MT expansion programme, the commissioning of these facilities and their speedy ramp up has contributed to the record breaking performance.

Tata Steel has commissioned all the major facilities planned under 1 MT expansion programme and has begun its journey for the next phase of expansion to 6.8 MTPA at Jamshedpur. The construction activities of the new 2 MT Sinter Plant, and the new 2.5 MT blast furnace are on schedule.
