Jamshedpur, October 15, 2004

Promotion of sports and adventure as well as the development of outstanding sportsmen and women were begun at Tata Steel long ago and it has now become a way of life in this Company. In this context, once Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Nation had said that Tata's represent the Spirit of Adventure. One more event that exemplifies this spirit was inaugurated today, on October 15, 2004 by Mr. Niroop Mahanty Vice President Human Resource Management Tata Steel and a sky and scuba diver himself. It is the first Artificial Sports climbing Wall of International standard 15m high 6m wide in Jharkhand/Bihar constructed by Tata Steel, on which the 10th East Zone Sport Climbing Competition (EZSCC), the first of it's kind in Jharkhand, was also inaugurated.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Mahanty expressed his happiness on the new facility provided at the JRD Tata Sports Complex and exhorted the people of Jharkhand to take advantage of this healthy and wholesome adventure sport. The spirit ignited by J N Tata and subsequently by JRD Tata is what is required more than ever before to lead an enriching and rewarding life both at work and at recreation, he added. He lauded the effort of Ms Bachendri Pal in bringing this new excitement and adventure in the life of people.

EZSCC is being conducted under the aegis of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) New Delhi. Senior officials of the IMF, Col Amit Roy Chairman of Zonal Sports Climbing Competition and Mr. Magan Bissa Senior most mountaineer of India have come over to oversee the conduct of the competition organized by Tata Steel Adventure Foundation. They are both happy to see the large number of participation i.e. 203 in all, from Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal including Darjeeling.

Artificial Sport climbing is slowly gaining momentum, particularly after the first Indigenously constructed Wall was fully sponsored by Tata Steel at IMF New Delhi. Indian climbers are now being, prepared for Asian Championships. World open and World cups are regular events of Sport Climbing, which operates under the rules formed by UIAA, the world Apex Climbing body.

Climbing Artificial Wall is a challenge, requiring and testing various skills. The degree of challenge can be varied by the climber, as per his/her expertise and confidence level, by selecting the appropriate route on the wall. It requires foresight planning, determination and skill as well as courage and strength. Artificial Wall provides both fun and adventure to all irrespective of age. With all these efforts Tata Steel can justifiably claim that, "We produce high class steel and top class sportsmen"
