Tata Steel's April-December, 2003-04 production performance

Jamshedpur, January 03, 2004

Tata Steel created history by producing more than 3 million tonnes of Crude and Saleable Steel, first time, for the period April to December of the current financial year. Crude and Saleable steel production was 3.17 million tonnes and 3.05 million tones respectively. This corresponds to a jump of 6% over last financial year's figures for the same period.

Tata Steel's domestic sales stood at 2.45 million tonnes in this period, which is 7% higher than that of last year, when sales were 2.30 million tones. Tata Steel exported 0.46 million tonnes during April to December.

With the objective of de-linking the company's performance from the cyclical nature of commodity based steel business cycle to a more stable and high realization regime, Tata Steel's efforts to enrich the product mix, enter into synergistic partnerships with auto customers and to brand its products has paid rich dividends. The sale of branded products like Tata Tiscon reinforcing bars, Tata Shaktee corrugated galvanized sheets and Tata Steelennium cold rolled sheets, witnessed a significant spurt. This strategy has continued to facilitate Tata Steel's ambition of becoming an EVA positive company, a situation it aspires to sustain.
