Tata Steel Shares Learning with the Steel Industry

Jamshedpur, March 16, 2004

Environment Management and Energy Conservation are the exhortations of the day and Tata Steel has answered this by commissioning a facility in January this year, for recovery of waste-gas heat from its ‘G’ blast furnace to improve its energy efficiency and reduce emissions. Having taken the lead in environment initiatives and corporate sustainability, Tata Steel organised a seminar on "The Utilisation Of Sensible Heat From Blast Furnace Hot Stove Waste Gas".

Representatives from major steel companies were invited to the seminar, today at Jamshedpur. The Ministry of Steel and the Ministry of Environment, Government of India participated in the proceedings. Mr Sudhansu Sekhar Saha, Industrial Adviser, Steel Ministry speaking at the occasion said that Tata Steel had been playing a significant role in the steel industry since 1907 and it was pleasant to see that the Company had not rested but had continued to strive to cut costs and produce value additions.

Mr R. P. Singh VP, Engineering Services and Projects, Tata Steel said that Tata Steel considered its obligation to share this knowledge, of utilisation of sensible heat from blast furnace hot stove waste gas, with others in the Industry. Mr AM Siddiqui from the New Energy and Industrial Technological Development Organisation, Japan upheld similar views, noting, "We are bound to disseminate the technology among steel players of the
country."

Also participating in the seminar were Mr. T. Yoneda and Mr. N. Soma from Nippon Steel Corporation, which had provided technical expertise and equipment for the project.

This is yet another initiatives which establishes that Tata Steel believes in going beyond mere compliance with legislation to proactively create a healthy environment both within the Company and outside, while improving the profitability and being the lowest cost steel producer.
